چکیده

[1] Tidal heating models are linked to thermal convection models for ice having strongly temperature dependent viscosity. In the range of ice viscosity inferred from laboratory experiments, tidal forces will heat up rising diapirs on Europa. Partial melt produced in the rising diapirs is predicted to create disruption of near-surface materials and formation of lenticulae and chaos, even if the average ice layer thickness overlying an ocean is larger than 20 km.

A model for the temperature-dependence of tidal dissipation in convective plumes on icy satellites: Implications for Europa and Enceladus

To explain the formation of surface features on Europa, Enceladus, and other satellites, many authors have postulated the spatial localization of tidal heating within convective plumes. However, the concept that enhanced tidal heating can occur within a convective plume has not been rigorously tested. Most models of this phenomenon adopt a tidal heating with a temperature-dependence derived for...

Hydrothermal Plume Dynamics on Europa: Implications for Chaos Formation

Hydrothermal plumes may be responsible for transmitting tidally-generated heat from Europa’s rocky interior through a liquid ocean to the base of its ice shell. This process has been implicated in the formation of chaos regions and lenticulae by melting or exciting convection in the ice layer. In contrast to earlier work, we argue that Europa’s ocean should be treated as an unstratified fluid. ...

Tidal Dissipation in Europa’s Ice Shell with a Heterogeneous Temperature Distribution

Introduction: Heterogeneous tidal dissipation in Europa’s ice shell has been suggested as a mechanism to generate tectonic features on the surface [1-3]. Several authors have proposed that Europa’s pits, uplifts, and chaos terrains resulted from surface deformation by convection within the ice shell [1,4-5]. If tidal heating were temperature dependent, as predicted for a homogeneous material wi...

Chaos and Lenticulae on Europa: Structure, Morphology and Comparative Analysis

Introduction: Based on Voyager imaging of Jupiter’s moon Europa, Lucchita and Soderblom [1] classified the surface of this icy satellite into two major terrain types: plains and mottled terrain. Mottled terrain was defined as consisting of isolated small spots, hummocky topography, and sometimes broken-up lineae. One of the primary goals of the Galileo mission was to determine the origin and pa...
